Ty Herndon is a household name to country music fans due to his impressive string of hits that began in 1995 when Herndon’s debut single, “What Mattered Most,” rocketed to number one. With 17 singles that have landed him on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, numerous industry awards, and more than 4 million albums sold, one might think Herndon would be content to sit back and reflect on his career achievements. Instead, Herndon recently signed a new recording deal with FUNL Music. The Nashville label has announced Ty Herndon as its flagship artist, and released to radio “Journey On,” the title single from his upcoming album.

For those who know him, Ty Herndon’s passion and commitment to music is not surprising. Raised in Butler, Alabama, Herndon has been a professional entertainer since his teenage years. At age 17, he performed at OPRYLAND USA as a cast member of “Today’s Country Roads.” He went on to compete in the first season of the now iconic television series, “Star Search” and was a winner in the male-vocalist category. This accolade led to appearances on numerous television shows and commercials.

As a live performer, Ty Herndon gained popularity while playing the honky tonks in Texas, and in 1993 he was named Texas Entertainer of the Year. That honor led to interest from Music Row and a record deal with Epic Records. Herndon made his chart debt in 1995 with “What Mattered Most,” which became his first #1 song and garnered a Song of the Year award (Music Row Magazine). It was also the title track to his debut album, which debuted at #15 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and had the biggest first-week shipment in the history of Epic Records’ Nashville.

Not long after his win as Best New Artist at the Country Radio Music Awards, Herndon felt the weight and pressures of success. In 1995, Herndon faced a very public battle with addiction and entered rehabilitation. As part of his personal healing process, Herndon reached out to others in need, donating his time and talents to organizations such as Make A Wish, St. Jude, and Feed the Children. Herndon’s missteps, however, did not curtail his career. He topped the charts in 1996 with the single “Living in a Moment” and again in 1998 with “It Must Be Love.” Between 1995 and 2002, Herndon charted 17 singles including his three number 1’s and numerous top 10 hits such as “I Want My Goodbye Back,” “Loved Too Much,” “A Man Holding On (To a Woman Letting Go),” and “Hands of a Working Man.”

Opening for Herndon is StevensLayne! Meet this incredibly powerful up and coming group that consists of Macon’s own Molly Stevens. After moving to Nashville from Macon, Molly Stevens met Whitney Layne at a Nashville music venue and instantly joined forces as a singer/songwriter duo! Whitney has been in Nashville for over three years and has been very successful advancing her independent artist career. But after meeting Molly Stevens, she knew that her path was about to take a huge turn…“I would have been crazy to deny the magic that happens when our voices combine forces,” says Layne. Stevens and Layne have been very busy writing in Nashville and playing shows on the road as a duo.

Born and raised in Macon, Georgia, Nick Malloy has been playing the bars since the age of fifteen. Just over the past year, Malloy has begun taking over the southeast music scene like wild fire. Word of his strong vocals, good looks, and rockin’ band has created quite a buzz. Nick Malloy is known for his high energy live shows that always leave fans wanting more. In March of 2010, Malloy spent time in the studio in Nashville, Tennessee, recording a five song CD that has already caught the attention of big time country artists like Dierks Bentley and Jason Aldean. The five tunes were recorded at County Q Studios and were produced by Nick’s longtime friend and Macon native, Brian Layson (who currently plays lead guitar for Dierks Bentley).

“Youth may be in their blood, but tradition guides their instincts”, reveals M! Music & Musicians Magazine. “The Dirty Guv’nahs are wise in the ways of rock and roll beyond their tender years.” One thing is for sure – the swell of grassroots momentum for this 6-piece rock outfit has generated considerable buzz up and down the east coast recently. Their live shows are selling out venues and theatres from New York City to Florida, where fans pack in to experience a full-bore musical energy characteristic of The Avett Brothers, early Black Crowes, and The Rolling Stones.

The group’s unlikely genesis took place in their beloved hometown of Knoxville, Tenn. where the community has subsequently elected “The Guvs” as the “Best Band In Knoxville” for 4 years running. Comprised mostly of young graduate students, The Guvs had meager aspirations to simply play the kind of music they loved – roots rock and roll – which had all but disappeared from the scene at the time. Their hobby turned into a more serious profession, however, when they gained the attention of the Grammy-award- winning team at Levon Helm studios. In 2010, the band recorded their most recent album Youth Is In Our Blood in Levon’s famous barn, and they haven’t looked back since. Touring to support their music has brought The Guvs to festivals such as Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, and SXSW. They have also played with a variety of major acts, including Train, Zac Brown Band, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Dr. Dog, Levon Helm Band, Blues Traveler, Robert Earl Keen, Drive-By Truckers, Taj Mahal, The Whigs, and Sister Hazel.

The Guvs’ sound, which has been described as “a passionate, jubilant slice of rock meets Americana,” is accomplished through a sturdy foundation of gritty guitar tones and tight rhythms, accented with smooth harmonies, crunchy Hammond organ, bluesy piano and vigorous lead guitar solos. The soulful melodies and catchy choruses come courtesy of the band’s front man, James Trimble, who has drawn comparisons to Jagger, Morrison, and Springsteen in terms of both voice and energy. The finished delivery is a “must see live act” that was accurately described by a recent review in Nashville’s Music Connection Magazine – “The Dirty Guv’nahs possess a vintage zest that’s simple enough to attract a variety of listeners, yet a sound mature enough to capture a grizzled industry veteran. This band doesn’t just play music; they capture the human spirit through song.”

I started playing guitar in my hometown of Connersville, Indiana at age 12. I had many influences ranging from Johnny Smith to Chet Atkins. After seeing Chet play once on the Grand Ole Opry, I set about attempting to learn his style of play. Lonnie Mack was another early influence. His instrumental version of Memphis was a guitar player’s dream song and when I finally learned how to play the solo I was ecstatic. R&B was also the thing in those days and I loved that music.

Bill Lakes and the Playboys, a local band, was one of my first bands in which I had the opportunity to grow as a young player. We played a lot of R&B and Blues, which was a great training ground for any guitar player. I also enjoyed playing country music, as long as they had a decent pedal steel player. I got pretty adept at picking out the chord formations and playing along in harmony.

The first National act that I joined was The Melting Pot Band on Capricorn Records in 1969 replacing the guitar player who had been injured. In late 1975 I was living in St. Petersburg, Florida and making three-dollars a night playing for the door. Two guys from the band I was playing with got a call from Dickey Betts and went to join him to start the Dickey Betts and Great Southern Band. They said he was looking for a guitar player and that they would try to get me an audition. I didn’t feel I had a chance at an audition, let alone the gig. But a few days later, I was coming in from the pool and the phone was ringing from a booth just outside our apartment door, it kept ringing and ringing. Finally I’d had enough and answered it. A voice on the other end said, “I am looking for Dan Toler, this is Dickey Betts calling” and I said “yeah right” and hung up the phone. Fortunately, he called back. We talked for a while and during the conversation, he offered to fly me to Macon, Georgia for a look see.

I gave ‘em my best stuff at the audition and it must’ve paid off because a few days later, I was part of the band. Over the next few years I played with Dickey and the band on two Great Southern records, “Dangerous” and “Atlanta’s Burning Down”. In 1979 the Allman Brothers Band was auditioning players in Macon at the Capricorn Records Picnic. I was asked to play. When I got home the next day Dickey called me and said they wanted to make me be an Allman Brother. I was with the Brothers for the next three Allman Brothers records; “Enlightened Rogues” in 1979, “Reach for the Sky” in 1980 and “Brothers of the Road” the next year. In 1982, Gregg Allman was starting to sour on his contract with Arista Records. That January Gregg, I and my brother Frankie left the Allman Brothers and formed the Gregg Allman Band. After five years of gigging, writing and recording the band was able to land a deal with Epic Records. In 1987 we recorded the album, “I’m No Angel” In 1988 we recorded the album “Just Before the Bullets Fly”. The success of those two records propelled us through 1989 with “I’m no Angel” going gold. In 1990 when Gregg reformed the Allman Brothers Band, my brother and I decided to do our own project, The Toler Brothers Band. We toured extensively with acts like Black Oak Arkansas, Southern Rock All-Stars, Radio Tokyo and Molly Hatchet. In ’95 Gregg approached me about playing with him again as Gregg Allman and Friends.

It was during this time I reconnected with Johnny Townsend. Johnny, my brother David (Frankie) Toler and I had been playing with the Gregg and Friends band in California. In no time Johnny and I hit it off and we started writing songs together. Even after the tour ended, I would send tapes to John and he would write lyrics to my music. Very soon we had composed a number of great tunes. I first met Johnny Townsend when I was working with Gregg’s band, playing on the West Coast in the 1980s. Johnny would come sit-in with us and sing tunes like “Stormy Monday Blues” and he would absolutely mesmerize the audiences and get standing ovations. He just blew us all away. I think Johnny Townsend is a powerful vocalist with a great talent for lyrics and chord changes and I’m proud to stand on stage with him.

Writing music with Johnny and playing in a band together… it doesn’t get any better than that for me. My Brother David and I had been doing some recording in Sarasota Florida at Telstar Studio with our friend and engineer Bud Snyder. We recorded four of five instrumental tracks and decided to send them to Johnny. The lyrics Johnny came up with were absolutely incredible and Johnny’s vocals were exactly what we needed to make our band complete. We continued to work on the music on and off for several years. This project would eventually become our first CD, “The Toler/Townsend Band”. I continued to play with other bands periodically like The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Hiland, Nick Moroch, Lonnie Mack, Matt Guitar Murphy, Warren Haynes, Derrick Trucks, Jimmy Herring, Altar Bridge, Three Doors Down and Steve Gorman of The Black Crows, doing some touring and guest appearances.

In 2002 I was approached by Dickey Betts again to play with Great Southern. During this time we recorded an acoustic album called “The Collectors # 1″. I stayed with Dickey until I got a call from my old friend George McCorkle from Marshal Tucker Band. George wanted to put together Southern Rock Legends band. We called that band “The Renegades”. We were joined by Johnny Townsend and Jack Hall from Wet Willie. We toured the U.S. with acts like Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat and The Outlaws. It was a lot of fun but the whole time that band was together, all me and Johnny could talk about was the music we had been making as The Toler/Townsend Band.

When The Renegades went their separate ways, Johnny and I revived our music and started posting it in selected places online and within forty-eight hours we started getting interest from people in the European community. Reviews and magazine interviews followed and then interest from a European record company. We’re very excited to announce that we’ve recently signed with Music Avenue and our CD, “The Toler/Townsend Band”, was released overseas in March 2009.

Hope to see you down the road…..

It is difficult and often highly dangerous to hang a label on music. Labels can close doors to some of the most exciting talents, and close ears to artists whose fresh vitality demands to be heard. Mother’s Finest is a powerful band, but they are not typical.

The group has created a sound they describe as a fusion of Funk, Rock, Gospel, R&B Metal and Jazz, taken directly from the street to the stage to the studio that is Afro-Euro Mosaic Soulful and Electric, transcending musical division, and negative stereotyping. They call it METAFUNK’NPHYSICAL, the running title of their latest CD.

Back in the day, this kind of fusion music was rare to say the least, but the versatility and originality of Mother’s Finest, brought down many barriers.

Mother’s Finest original members are Joyce Kennedy and Glenn Murdock, lead vocals, Jerry “Wyzard” Seay, bass, Gary “Mo” Moore, lead guitar, John Hayes, lead guitar, Michael Keck, keyboards and Berry (BB Queen) Borden, drummer.

Alex Cooley’s Electric Ballroom was where Tom Werman of Epic records saw Mother’s Finest for the first time in Atlanta Georgia. They went on to record their first of three gold albums ” Another Mother Further”, “Mother Factor”, and “Mother’s Finest Live “.

Known internationally, they are incomparable and unique in their ability to bring it to you in concert. And today they are still one of the best LIVE bands on the planet.

In today’s world of multiplicity, and ethnic diversity, there is a oneness in people and music that has always been in the sound of Mother’s Finest. If you can’t remember the name, remember the initials. MF

Livingston Taylor first picked up a guitar at 13 & thus began a 41 year career that has encompassed performance, songwriting & teaching. Born in Boston, raised in North Carolina, Livingston is the fourth child in a very musical family that includes Alex, James, Kate and Hugh. He recorded his first record at 18 and has continued to create well-crafted, introspective and original songs that have earned him listeners worldwide.

From top-forty hits “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running,” to “I Can Dream of You” and “Boatman” both recorded by his brother James, Livingston’s creative output has continued unabated. His musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire, and he is equally at home with a range of musical genres—folk, pop, gospel & jazz – from upbeat storytelling to touching ballads.

Livingston has never stopped performing since those early coffeehouse days, touring with major artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffet and Jethro Tull, and he maintains a busy concert schedule of over eighty shows a year. He is a natural performer, peppering his shows with personal stories, anecdotes and ineffable warmth that connect him to his fans. His relaxed on-stage presence belies the depth of his musical knowledge, and fans might just as often be treated to a classic Gershwin or something from the best of Broadway.

As a full professor at Berklee College of Music since 1989, Livingston shares his experiences and knowledge of professional touring with young artists, just beginning to hone their skills. His course, Stage Performance (I and II) is one of the most popular at the College, and it gives him the ideal forum in which to impart the lessons learned through his own career to a new generation of musicians. His book, Stage Performance, is drawn from those classes will be available this fall.

Beneath the colorful pop exterior is a multi-layered musical family of real-life mom (Lisa), dad (Billy), and daughter (Emily), whose combined talent makes up the nationally known, TV friendly family band called “Laughing Pizza.” Their music videos, or “Pizza Breaks,” are seen daily on PBS in millions of homes around the country.

Lisa and Billy are award winning song-writers and are both classically trained musicians, having attended Juilliard and Berklee. They are also both former music teachers. Their fourteen year old daughter, Emily, is a multi-instrumentalist who plays bass, drums, guitar, piano and flute. Together they create fun, inspiring (and educational) music for the whole family! Laughing Pizza has appeared on the Today Show and performed at the White House three consecutive years (most recently with Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers). Laughing Pizza was featured in Money Magazine, The New York Times, Family Energy Magazine, and The School Library Journal. Additionally, they have appeared on CNN, CBS Showbuzz, NY1, CN8, Fox Morning Atlanta and CBS Better Mornings. Laughing Pizza has released two DVDs and 4 CDs on their label “Little Bean Family Entertainment” and are the proud recipients of six Parents’ Choice Awards. Their song “On My Way” was chosen by Julie Andrews and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton (who co-wrote the lyrics) to be featured in the beautiful new book “Julie Andrews Collection of Songs, Poems, and Lullabies” (Little/Brown). Their live performances are energetic, interactive, dance-filled shows that get kids and parents up and moving, and have created a loyal following across the country.

Please plan to join us for this special FUN FAMILY CONCERT.

DEAD CONFEDERATE

Challenges and changes do nothing, if not inspire.

After a few years of touring hard in the States and overseas, recent times have been seemingly low-key and quiet for a loud band like Dead Confederate; they’ve more or less remained off the radar for the last
Year. In this short time, the band adapted to their drummer leaving to start a family, learning to work with a handful of new drummers, and half of the remaining members getting married (not to each other). 2011 saw its fair share of music from them, although not the typical side of Dead Confederate: There were many solo performances from members, an expanded incarnation of the band that ventured out on mini-tours playing Neil Young’s Tonight’s The Night in its entirety and, most recently, the formation of
Diamond Rugs (a “super group” featuring Dead Confederate’s Hardy Morris, Deer Tick’s John McCauley
& Robbie Crowell, Black Lips’ Ian St Pe, Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin and Brian Dufresne of Six Finger
Satellite).

It is in times like these that some bands discover what success really means to them. As the band began mixing their third, currently-untitled LP (this time in their home of Athens, GA with producer David Barbe), singer/guitarist Hardy Morris had this to say about Dead Confederate’s success – “I don’t think any of us have a desire for any kind of quote-unquote fame. All we want is to be able to make records. No one’s ever been looking to own Bentleys and swimming pools. We are happy calling ‘making records and playing shows our job. If you would have told me when I was a kid that I would have seen half the world and done a fraction of the stuff we’ve done, I would have called you crazy.”

On their new album – “I think these songs are kind of a culmination of all the stuff we’ve done. I know for me, I wanted to approach this album like it was the last thing I was going to do; the last album I’d make. I knew that wasn’t the case, but that’s the mindset I held going in because I think, in some ways, that’s what people want to hear. I know that’s what I want to hear… Songs that feel like it might be someone’s last breath; some desperation, some finality. Not to say it’s going to be an exceptionally bleak album or anything, but most of the songs we’ve recorded for this album hold onto that darker, quasi-southern vibe we do. I think it has some similarities to both of our previous records, but in the end it will certainly be its own thing.”

For Dead Confederate, 2012 is shaping up to be an interesting year – “We are label free at the moment, so it’s kind of like starting anew in a way. It’s all a bit fresher and there is excitement for sure. I think, for musicians, it’s healthy when things are a bit up-in-the-air. Not just, ‘we gotta make a record by some labels deadline.’ We are just glad to be doing our own thing in the studio and able to take our time and get into it; it’s great being on our own timeline. We are planning to go have some fun at SXSW for sure, and find the right home for the record at some point. After the record is released we will tour. My side project, Diamond Rugs will be out at SXSW, so I’m sure we will do some sets with both bands out there and tour all of it later in the year.”

Along with writing for and recording the new album, Dead Confederate used the last year to dig into a huge collection of old material. Over the second half of 2011, the band used Facebook as a platform to release 18 unreleased home recordings and B-sides in their first installment of their Sunday Archive series. These releases are something they plan to continue going forward, consisting of never-before heard tunes released free and direct to the fans followed by limited edition cassette tapes released in volumes. With a new album on the way and a huge collection of older tunes just waiting for release, 2012 will be anything but “quiet” for Dead Confederate.

PACKWAY HANDLE BAND

SAINT FRANCIS

Macon GA’s Scott Baston, former front man of nationally touring rock band Moonshine Still, has returned to the music scene he left over three years ago- but this time with some apparently divine guidance. After a decade in the bus, and a handful of successful albums to his credit, Baston decided the rigors of the road and the state of the touring scene had taken its toll on everything important to him. Now, retooled and reinvigorated, Baston is on a mission. And his new project, Saint Francis, is raising eyebrows from New England to Nashville.

Baston has recruited a potent mix of new talent, creating a new rock-country crossover that has industry pros buzzing. Mark Van Allen, pedal steel master of Grammy award winning Sugarland, joins Rackley Davis of The Incredible Sandwich (drums/vocals), Jeremy Johnson (lead guitar/vocals), Carlos Enamorado (bass guitar), and Scott “Boss” Hogg (keyboards/vocals) to complete an impressive musical collaborative from which Baston can launch. And launch he does, with a solid fuel booster of soaring vocals inside hauntingly beautiful melodies, a recipe that has placed Baston atop the singer/songwriter heap for over a decade.

Now with the fire and spirit of a down home Georgia gospel church on revival Sunday, Baston and Saint Francis are transporting audiences to higher musical planes- baptized in a wave of musical influences on tides that run from blues to bluegrass, rock to reggae, world beats to soulful treats. Through this incredible musical brotherhood; Baston, Saint Francis, and their fans both old and new, are happily floating inside The Bubble again- always reminded by the band’s mantra, “We Are Here To Be As One!”

Scott Baston (lead vocal/rhythm guitar): Born and raised in Middle Georgia, Scott was raised on “greens and gospel”. For over a decade, Scott spent his time traveling, writing and performing with nationally touring rock band Moonshine Still. Scott is a trained vocalist who really moves people. His singing and songwriting is a match made in heaven. He is able to express himself using his own voice, through his own music and in his own unique way. As a credit to his voice, the current line-up consists of friends and fans of his previous projects.

Mark Van Allen (pedal steel/lap steel/dobro): As a touring and session musician, Mark has appeared with a wide variety of artists, covering many musical genres, including Shawn Mullins, Buddy Miles, Hank Thompson, Indigo Girls, Blueground Undergrass, Warren Haynes, Sugarland, Jimmy Herring, Leftover Salmon, Vassar Clements, and many more. His colorful chordal waves and thoughtful soloing inspire and invite you to listen deeper.

Jeremy Johnson (lead guitar/vocals): The “other” front man so to speak. Having been friends for years, Scott and Jeremy started playing music together in 2006. A recent graduate of the Georgia College music program, Jeremy spends his down time performing regularly as a solo artist in and around Macon. Jeremy’s guitar playing with fantastic flying leads, tasty riffs and a touch of “chicken picken” is a great compliment to Scott’s rhythmic intensity. Jeremy leads the Georgia Music Summer School of Rock and is active with Leadership Macon.

Rackley Davis (drums/vocals): After graduating from Berry College with a music degree in percussion, Rackley made his way to Athens, Georgia and its vibrant music scene. It is there where he became the driving force of Athens jam rockers “The Incredible Sandwich”- winners of the 2010 Flagpole Magazine Music Award for Best Jam Band. He has spent over a decade perfecting his craft, utilizing solo instruction from some of the best drummers and percussionists in the business. This, in conjunction with a 200 night a year performance schedule, has been the foundation of Rackley’s electrifying rhythms and unique tribal beats. His skills have been lauded by some of the biggest producers and promoters in America.

Carlos Enamorado (bass guitar): A student of the music program at Georgia State, Carlos is a player who can express himself well beyond his living years. Holding down the groove or putting on the icing, Carlos is the flour that holds this cake together. Carlos loves the theory of music and is in a constant state of study. When he does make room for some down time, he spends it playing with his jazz side project – Flamingo Royale. Carlos is a fantastic player with the whole world in front of him and the desire to explore.

Scott “Boss” Hogg (keyboards/vocals): As master of the keys, Scott is a wonderful player. Underneath the long dreads are big ears, which he uses to “fit right in” to that Saint Francis sound. Organ swells and piano leads just when you want them, he’s as tasty as they come. Scott has entertained audiences on radio and television for nearly two decades, and is best known for his on-air persona, Boss Hogg. He has owned and operated commercial radio stations for the last 15 years and his pipes are heard around the country in some of America’s top snow-sports competitions, auto races, and stadium motor-cross events.
